It is said that the Rulers who kept India back on its spiritual heels after invasion, for example, the Vijayanagar Empire and The Maratha Empire, instead of renovating them, they’d have become even stronger in the army if they had turned their wealth into this. But they gave superior priority to the God within and the sacred knowledge and culture of this nation.
Queen Ahilyabai Holkar, hails from Chaundi village, she took up the mission of reestablishing the lost culture and renovated a vast number of temples across the nation.
Ahilyabai came to the throne in 1754 and became a saviour, not only of her kingdom, but most of the surviving ancient temples of this land. She herself was a great warrior and personally led armies to the battle ground and saved many temples from the invaders.
She even reconstructed the present structure of Kashi Viswanath Temple Varanasi to the Mallikarjuna Temple of Srisailam. Ahilyabai is not only good at warcraft, she’s a [philosopher and musician and encouraged the creative side in her court at Maheshwar.
The greatest thing about her was that she never used public funds or asked for donations to reconstruct the ancient temples. Many historians call her the Philosopher queen and a well-educated citizen. An English poet Joanna Baillie wrote about her like this…
“For thirty years her reign of peace,
The land in blessing did increase;
And she was blessed by every tongue,
By stern and gentle, old and young.
Yea, even the children at their mother’s feet,
Are taught such homely rhyming to repeat.
In latter days from Brahma came,
To rule our land, a noble Dame,
Kind was her heart and bright her fame,
And Ahilya was her honored name.”
