The Shrine of Mahakaleshwara is the epicentre where it unites the fairy tales and the current timeline together, for it is a living proof that Legendary kings like Vikramaditya, Chandra Sen, Bhartrhari does took a part in magnificent miracles.

The Shrine is the jewel of the Ancient City Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh, India, situated on the bank of The River Kshipra. The Jyothirlinga is said to be illuminated and used to spread its radiance and healed people from diseases and fear of death. Also, they would be granted worldly treasures and be under the protection of Shiva himself. It is one of the shrines of the Vaippu Sthalams sung by one of the Nayanars ‘Ascended Master Appar’. It is also a place where Saint Pattinathar performed great miracles during the reign of Bhartrhari. Poet Kalidasa also mentioned about this shrine in his Meghaduta.

Here the Lord Shiva is called as Dakshinamurthi, the deity that faced to South. It is said that, during the reign or King Chander Sen, who’s an ardent devotee of Shiva, a flock of invaders attacked the city with the army of Giants. Then the King received the blessing of the Lord and the Lingam got manifested in this shrine and its light drove the enemies away with its deriving currents of power.

Apart from the central structure, most of the shrine was newly renovated at it underwent a major destruction and the original lingam was dismantled by Iltutmish, however, the Maratha Empire restored the temple with its Ancient Glory. On the day of Maha Shivaratri, a huge fair is held near the temple, people celebrate the glory as well as the greatness of Shiva during this fest.
