The Temple of Omkareshwar is one of the Jyotirlingas that has significance right from the AUM shaped island it situated midst the Narmada River.
Around the temple, three magnificent gates are dedicated to the Mahabharata Heroes Dharamraj Dwar, Chand-Suraj Dwar and Bheem-Arjun Dwar. Apart from the chief attraction, there’s the unpretentious Kedareshwar Temple, the detailed 13th-century Siddhanath Barahdwari, and even the remains of the Gauri Somnath Temple. The temple island was called Shivpuri located on the Narmada River in Khandwa District Madhya Pradesh.
There are two shrines, one on the mainland called Amaleshwar, the lord of Immortality while the main shrine Omkareshwar, the lord of AUM – The origin of creation.
According to the legend, Vindya, the ruler of the Vindya mountain range built the primary shrine of shive with geometrical diagrams and a Lingam with sand and clay, thus he got redemption. It is also said that King Mandhata from Ikshwaku Dynasty also got redemption in this place.
